Big Iron

Part of my “Song Titles Reinterpreted” series, this is “Big Iron”. From our good friend Wikipedia: “’Big Iron’ is a country ballad by Marty Robbins, originally released as an album track on Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs in September 1959, then as a single in February 1960.

It tells the story of an Arizona Ranger’s duel with an outlaw named Texas Red in the town of Agua Fria, Arizona. The town predicts the death of the Ranger (Texas Red had already killed 20 men), but the Ranger kills Texas Red with the swiftness of the ‘big iron on his hip.’ This term refers to the gun the Ranger carries.”

Obviously I did not illustrate the song’s intention, but rather took it somewhat literally. Little dog, big iron.

This piece was originally created as an auction item for Midwest Music Foundation. In keeping with the intention of the work, 20% of proceeds from print sales will be donated to Midwest Music Foundation.

About Fine Art Prints

Each print is hand-signed and numbered by me, the artist. These prints are open-edition, which means that there is no limit on the amount that may be printed. I do offer limited edition hand-embellished prints of some, but not all, of my artworks. To see my available limited edition hand embellished prints, click here.

All Fine Art Prints are printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308g archival paper. This smooth, natural-white, 100 percent rag-based paper is specifically designed to meet the needs of photographers or artists using digital photographic output. While some papers are chosen due to surface characteristics, Photo Rag is popular because it intrudes the least. The coated side of this paper provides excellent image sharpness and optimum color graduation. The coating also offers a very high level of water resistance (but please – frame your prints properly – no using them for drink coasters!).
